Of course Critics United blocked me and deleted my thread, so I wrote the head of the group a PM:
I posted in your forum, but I think you then blocked me. I wanted to explain a bit about why people are so upset with your group.
It’s an awesome idea. The thought that someone can go to a forum and REQUEST critiques is just absolutely beautiful, and it has the potential to help so many fledgling writers. But seriously, the critiques some of your members (not all of them by any means!) are offering are simply not helpful. When they have things like “this is a shitfic, why did you even bother posting it” in them, that’s bullying. If they have things like “LOL you don’t even know the rules, you idiot” that is bullying. When they have things like “I can’t believe how dumb you are as a writer” then that is bullying.
If you’re serious about running a quality forum and a quality group, you really REALLY need to police your members better. As far as I can see, your group is simply an excuse for you all to get together and feel superior, and it’s the worst kind of elitism and contrary to the spirit of this site.
Oh, it’s also not your job to point out rule violators. It’s the job of the site admins. If they’re not doing their job, NOTIFY the admins. You don’t need to taunt fic writers with threats of reporting them. Report them. Notify the people who’s job it IS rather than behaving like jumped up vigilantes. Seriously. It’s immature, it’s unhelpful and it’s mean.
So. Thanks. Feel free to read my fics and critique them if you can be bothered. I look on this site as a way to develop my writing and accept any and all criticism with an open mind and a ready pen.
